Phenolic is material that has been used for decades as an isolation material due to its good dielectric strength and low water absorbtion.
A phenolic washer is made from a phenolic resin composite, also known as Bakerlite. It insulates a bolt from its flange to prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, particularly in pipeline and electrical applications. While historically used, they are now often replaced by stronger, less brittle materials like Mylar or G11 glass epoxy for applications with high bolt torque.
Whilst Phenolic Washers (and sleeves) have been widely used over the years it does tend to be fragile and can become brittle and crack or break if under bolt torque, significant stress or if not handled with care.
Suitable for general electrical applications. Not recommended for use in alkaline solutions. Unaffected by most organic solvents, except acetone.
